Randall Williams: The Jesus kitchen

My first Rainbow Gathering was magical. Among my favorite memories were meeting all the remarkable people. The sites are made up of a number of smaller camps, and the camps that feed people (all free!) are called kitchens. One of the kitchens was made up of kids whose goal is to feed people everywhere. They often set up in cities and serve free meals until city officials run them off. The Jesus Kitchen was a cool place to hang out, and sure enough, the kids there were serving meals, reading the Bible, and washing feet. They were washing feet of other hippies who ran around shoeless most of the time. It was humbling just to watch.

WASH someone’s feet

LYRICS
By Randall Williams

In a forest in Wyoming, just a few years ago,
I met a couple thousand hippies in the woods.
There were hippies painted blue, hippies without shoes,
Hippies who were just up to no good.

There were hippies doin’ yoga, hippies staying sober,
Hippies who were usually on the street,
A buncha hippies who were singing songs and dancing,
And there were hippies washing feet.

They had buckets full of Bibles, they preached the new revival,
They had Jesus in their hearts and in their songs.
Well yeah, I’ve read the Bible, but I ain’t big on proselytizing,
Or a church that says they’re right and I am wrong.

Still, it’s hard to argue with a hippie on his knees,
Who was bandaging an old man’s feet.
There were hippies who were singing songs and dancing,
And there were hippies washing feet.

Sometimes I’ve said I’d like to be more open hearted,
Sometimes I forget that talk is cheap.
‘Cause I was just singing songs and dancing,
while there were hippies washing feet.

    Yo! This song is excellent!!

I’ve now met two brothers on my spiritual journey who have been to rainbow gatherings and they were the most innocent, beautiful, receptive ideas I’ve ever met.

What a blessing you’ve given us with this perspective, Randall.

Thank you for your honesty and your expression.

    :)

“Sometimes I forget that talk is cheap” — ah, the essence of Radical Acts!

  6. Kate says:

I LOVE this song R. It is such a simple message of what really recommends our hearts…service to humanity, non-judgment, and the willingness to walk our message forward in a way that makes a difference in the lives of others.

I think my favorite lines is:

“Still, it’s hard to argue with a hippie on his knees,
Who was bandaging an old man’s feet.”

    sigh…love it…love you, k.

  7. I love this:

“Well yeah, I’ve read the Bible, but I ain’t big on proselytizing,
Or a church that says they’re right and I am wrong.”

When we Love unconditionally, people find Spirit and Life through our actions, not our preconceptions. :)

Thanks for the reminder Randall Ji.
