One-Person CSOs

What Have One-Person CSOs Done?

Look at what Moses, Jesus, and Mary Baker Eddy accomplished. Each was just one person. But none of them could have accomplished their monumental achievements without God. The spiritual basis of the power of one is the most powerful basis there is. It’s the power of the One, God.

At Bennington College in Vermont, a CSO was started by the only Christian Science student on campus. This college had recently been named one of the most likely to “ignore God.” The student sometimes felt alone there and intimidated by the prospect of being known as a Christian Scientist, especially at a school seemingly uninterested in spirituality. Yet, in spite of his fears, through prayer and trust that the Christ message was universal, he was able to find a handful of people interested in Christian Science who wanted to meet regularly to discuss these ideas. Later, he sponsored a lecture entitled, “The World Needs Artists: God Says So,” that resonated deeply with those in attendance.

At the University of North Carolina, one woman started a CSO whose activities embraced members from other faith backgrounds. She invited her friends to the CSO meetings where they each shared how they were praying about issues they faced. She later organized an interfaith panel discussion on women and religion.

While these are just two stories, there are a wide variety of activities that have been undertaken and even more that you might do. You don’t have to feel that your ability to get things done is limited because you are the only Christian Scientist on campus. Trust your prayers, and the practical steps will become apparent. Without a doubt CSOs bring big blessings to the academic community, regardless of how many people are involved!
