In church tonight, someone shared this citation as part of their testimony. I thought it fit perfectly in this discussion and adds more spiritual food for thought :)
It’s from Mary Baker Eddy’s remarks in response to the death of Pope Leo, and is in The First Church of Christ, Scientist and Miscellany:
“I sympathize with those who mourn, but rejoice in knowing our dear God comforts such with the blessed assurance that life is not lost; its influence remains in the minds of men, and divine Love holds its substance safe in the certainty of immortality.” (My 295:1)
What a perfect statement, Inge. Thank you MBE! And thank you, Inge, for posting it.
I love that too! It’s perfect!
Mrs. Eddy writes on page 366 of Science and Health:
“The physician who lacks sympathy for his fellow-being is deficient in human affection, and we have the apostolic warrant for asking: ‘He that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?’ Not having this spiritual affection, the physician lacks faith in the divine Mind and has not that recognition of infinite Love which alone confers the healing power.”
Amy,
Thank you for starting this thoughtful discussion, and thank you to everyone who has contributed.
I would like to add that it helps me when I am working with a patient, along with listening for the Christ to direct my work, I am knowing that God is comforting each of his children right now — “As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I (the Truth) comfort you;” Isa 66:13 It relieves me of any feeling that I personally bring the comfort or strength or peace to the situation. I also know that God’s thoughts are being revealed to everyone, and whatever healing message that person needs is right there for them.
Again thanks everyone for sharing your thoughts.
Marta
