After last night’s real chat, our group ended with a pact to give something away each day and then share what happens here on the forums.

I just had a really unexpected experience through this and just had to share with everyone!

So I had to go to the post office to send something to my sister in Portland. Before I left I grabbed an It’s About Good cd to leave open the opportunity to give it to someone who might want it.

The post office is close to Trader Joe’s and my mom was going to go there to pick up food so I volunteered to do it while I was out on my bike.

There is almost always someone soliciting donations outside of Trader Joe’s. I guess people who shop at Trader Joe’s are nice…or something.

So there was a man soliciting with a big smile and an open hand. I locked up my bike, headed inside, grabbed what I needed, and while waiting in line I heard this man talking loudly,

“There is no third dimension. It’s not about science, Copernicus, Newton, they were all wrong! It’s bigger than that! It’s infinity’s infinity! That’s what we’re talking about!”

I made eye contact with this guy and smiled, “That’s right, brother! Infinity’s infinity! I like that. That’s what it’s about.”

He laughed and smiled back. “Sometimes you gotta speak these people’s language. Gotta talk in physics, but it’s all the same. Buddha, Krsna, whatever.”

“That’s right, brother! Bless you!”

After I rang my stuff up I realized this guy would totally be into the cd I had in my bike. So I rushed off to find him in the parking lot and as I did I passed the man soliciting money.

“Excuse me, sir. Spare some change for the homeless?”

I ran by him, “Not right now. I gotta find this guy.”

So I ran into the parking lot, but couldn’t find him. Could it be that wasn’t what I needed to do?

I turned back to the man with his hand out. “Hey there, sorry. This guy inside was talking about infinity’s infinity inside and I’m really into that and wanted to talk with him.”

I looked at this man and he was not really following me.

“Right, well, I don’t have any change, but I’m Michael.”

“I’m Kevin.” We shook hands.

“Are you into music, Kevin?”

He hesitated a moment. “That’s not really what I need right now.”

Well what else could he need?

I smiled politely and went back to unlock my bike and ride home. When I went to unlock my bike I found that I couldn’t get the bike unlocked – the key was twisted! So then I paused. There was a purpose to all of this. And this is exactly what came to me:

Ask Kevin to pray for you.

Well, that was an interesting solution. So I smiled to myself, God is so funny sometimes, and went over to Kevin.

“Hey, brother. They key to my bike is twisted and I can’t get my bike unlocked. Could you pray for me?”

He hesitated again. “Well, sure. If I would pray I would just say, ‘Lord, please help this man unlock his bike.”

And that was it.

So I went back to my bike and paused for a moment. I treated myself with the thought: “There is only one key. No key to the key. Just God and his idea.”

And then I put my key into the lock and – POW – it worked perfectly! I shouted with joy.

“Kevin, it worked!”

“I think it always worked,” he said quietly as if I had tricked him into praying for me.

“No. It didn’t! It needed that prayer to God.”

He smiled and I got on my bike.

“Thank you, brother! Thank you, God!”

The lesson here? It’s not about a bunch of loud talk with fancy language like “infinity’s infinity.” That’s talk. It’s not “all the same.” It’s the humble, quiet, listening to God that Kevin represented. And it’s remembering that there isn’t a key to the key. We want to love everyone, we want to respect everyone, but there really is only one God and that God is a divine Principle that is always available to use – not just to talk about.

So that was what I gave today: The opportunity to pray! haha. Definitely didn’t see that one coming.

What did you give today?

What a great thing to give away!!!

I cheated a bit with my giveaway. On Saturday I cleaned out my front hall closet. I packed up 3 big bags of stuff that I no longer need or use for the most part and a few things that I could use, but I don’t have to (a warm jacket that I kind of love for one) and a few things I’d been holding on to “just in case.” I decided not to hoard based on fear in the guise of preparation. ;) And I’m taking it all to the thrift shop near me. (And I vowed to clean one area of my apartment in the same way once a week and give generously.)

Today’s giveaways:

Extra cash for the woman who helps me with some cleaning each week.

A special and coveted cookie for one of my apartment maintenance workers.

I’m feeling the pressure to get a better story to live up to Michael’s. ;)

Another story! So I went to the post office to send some packages today and usually there’s a really long line and only two workers. It wasn’t such a long line today, but the workers were stressed and definitely not having the best day.

So I sent my packages and wanted so badly to give this woman who was helping me something. I wanted to give her something! but the situation made me feel really limited.

So after I left I saw a party store down the street I had never seen before. I went inside and there were all these balloons and stuffed animals and all sorts of toys and goodies. “You know who never really gets appreciated? The postal workers,” I thought. I’m going to appreciate them.

So I got two little stuffed animals and tied balloons to them. Perfect.

The post office was soon closing, so I ran back in with these two little stuffed animals and balloons that were super cheap. When I came back inside I yelled,

“Happy Valentines Day!”

I will forever have the look on these two women’s faces to draw infinite happiness from. It was so beautiful.

Something so simple. So rarely thought of. But it made all the difference for me and for them!

“Let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father” (Matthew 5:16).

The inspiration and idea to do this came from God. Glory be to divine Love – always in action. AND IT MAKES YOU FEEL SO AWESOME!

I love this! Thanks for both great stories. So inspiring.

So far today, I have given cooperation. I find that being very nice and cooperating with people makes them really happy. Today, that was definitely the case as I happily agreed to leave a store to go get a receipt needed because their computer system wasn’t working.

After I left, it started working again. So by the time I got back, everything I needed to have done was complete and waiting for me. The gal that helped me was so sweet and all smiles, expressing her gratitude for my good attitude.

I thought about how differently that coud have gone for us both if I had been irritated or even just blah about the whole thing. Instead, I know we will both remember each other and be so glad to see each other should that happen in the future.

It’s still early in the day. I know there will be many more opportunities to give. :)

These are such great — and inspiring! — stories from all. Thanks so much for sharing these, guys. I’m feeling the same pressure that Amy’s feeling now, and that’s a good thing!

I agree about feeling the pressure! I have 2 bags of clothes in my bedroom I need to take over to the Humane Society Thrift Store. Seems shallow doesn’t it? However, I do believe that walking through the world, thinking as we do–magnifying the good–is giving a lot! :)

To everyone: DON’T FEEL ANY PRESSURE!!! Does God feel pressure to do good, nah. This is what we are meant to do. And as Michael says, it feels great.

Well, first, I shared this forum with a ton of my friends and family to encourage them to give something away everyday and they all loved the idea.

Today I also gave away a pin that I keep on my jacket. I have two actually. One is a no war pin and another says “occupy your heart.” I got into a conversation with a young man at the cafe this afternoon about the No War pin. He said keep preaching and I said, darn right. We all have to be preaching. If we don’t keep living peace and telling others about the need for peace, then war will try and sneak up on us and convince us that peace isn’t gonna work this time. We both agreed to share this message as much as we could. I then took off one of my pins and gave it to him and told him to keep doing the good work and he was appreciative. It was great.

Can’t wait for tomorrow!

So my giveaway today was grace and patience. Because of this thread, I kept my mouth shut when someone didn’t do what I’d asked them to do (more than once). Instead of voicing my impatience, I used those moments to actively love the individual more. I actually felt this warm feeling, it was that tangible.

So this is one of those unknown giveaways because telling the person would’ve ruined it. But actually the biggest beneficiary was probably me. Does that count???

YES IT COUNTS! haha. So awesome to see this take off. I had a pretty wild day today – lots of opportunity for giving!

I had a friend who I hadn’t seen in a long, long time come over. We got into a conversation about politics (aw dang) that made him share that he felt that the Christian Science Monitor was too political leaning a certain way for him to support it.

I had, actually, dealt with something similar and had spent a long time not reading it. I was determined to fix the resistance to a paper I knew was doing a lot of good in the world so I picked up a little pamphlet at my local Christian Science Reading Room called “Engaging with the Christian Science Monitor” and it led me to read it on a daily basis and include the issues I read about in it in my daily prayers. I was so thrilled to give it over to him today!

Then I had the opportunity walk through Downtown LA and gave away a couple of free lunches to people who asked me to get them something to eat. Wow – so many people out there love Jesus! ha ha. Why wouldn’t you when you really know what he was about?

GREAT DAY! THANKS GOD!

yesterday I made some valentines day cards (yes, I know I’m late, but we’re celebrating LOVE all week)with my little ones and walked them over to our neighbor’s house. She was happy and put them up in her kitchen.

Lots of good today!

So I left our CSO expecting to give a Science and Health to a friend on campus who expressed interest in learning more about Christian Science.

When I went to find her she wasn’t at the Innovation Lab where she works, but I gave away a book about
Lean Start-up companies to the creative director to give to some of the students who are preparing companies. I tried to give the kind of heavy Science and Health away to my friend since I was on my bike, but he already had one. Two, actually. ha.

As we were walking this super jazzed guy with a burrito stopped us to ask us to vote for his friend for president. He had such an amazing vibe, such a great energy, that I thought to myself “I don’t know anything about this guy’s friend, but I want to vote for this guy!” haha.

His name was Boomer and after walking past him I got the message, “Give Boomer the Science and Health.”

Well, I’ve learned to listen to these voices, so I came up to him and said,

“Are you into immortality?” Well he answered, “Ya, absolutely!” And when I pulled out the book and started telling him about it he immediately said, “I love the Lord!” I told him that I knew it! haha.

So he flipped open the book and read from it. “This is deep.” That’s right it’s deep, Boomer!

We talked for a little while longer, exchanged information, and I told him to check out this website. Maybe he’ll find this post and see me talking about him! haha.

An important point here: I had a beautiful realization after this experience that I am not a renegade. I am not alone. I am not carrying Christian Science on my back to share it with the world. That Mary Baker Eddy set up a beautifully, divinely inspired organization to share Christian Science with the world. This topic is about supporting each other in our sharing – knowing that when I share you share, when you share I share, when one shares we all share!

That the church gives us the resources needed to support our own individual ministry, that ministry is not a competition and that it is not isolated or separated. Christ’s ministry is OUR ministry!

Later in the day I was biking by a delicious fresh fruit stand and decided to get some pineapple (I love pineapple). I realized that I had enough to get two, and that there would be SOME opportunity in the near future to give away the second one! BE PREPARED!

Of course, I found an opportunity to give away the second cup, but more importantly, a woman stopped me on the street and asked for some change. We talked for a bit and I gave her a flier to a Christian Science lecture happening in Los Angeles totally in Spanish (she’s a spanish speaker).

If you’re thinking – “Man, this guy gives away a lot of stuff” let me share what I’ve learned – ALWAYS BE PREPARED! Mentally prepare yourself for these encounters and you’ll have them! See them as opportunities to talk with God – NOT ABOUT GOD.

In all of these experiences I had to have the items I gave away on my person – so do that! When you have the idea and the object they are, actually, the same thing! When you are willing to give away the idea you will, of course, give away the object, also!

I got the Science and Health from the CSO, the Journal from the Reading Room, the flier for the lecture from the church, and the fruit from a guy with a stand on the side of the road next to a CS nursing facility – Church Manual up in hurr!

There’s something to this whole idea of divine Science! It’s a Science for goodness sakes!

Celebrating Love all week is a good thing Clementine! :)

After Michael’s posts I am realizing how much more I need to get out of the apartment…it’s a little trickier to give face to face when you’re holed up at home.

But thanks to the miracle of the internet it’s still possible.

Yesterday I gave personalized invitations to our upcoming Time4Thinkers Live chat, “Healed.” These were specifically to people who don’t know much about Christian Science, but who are very interested in and have experienced spiritual healing. And the nice thing about this event is that the invitation includes an audio piece of a wonderful healing so even if they just listen to that….

Today I’m going to try to get out. It’s too beautiful not to!

Great day today, glory be to God.

[Fill in the blank with your day]

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast” (Ephesians 2: 8).
