Great day today, glory be to God. Friday I took a friend out for a Starbucks. We sat outside in the sun (a wonderful thing in NYC in the winter) and chatted. I told her that she was my giveaway…and then I told her about some of the amazing things shared in this thread and mine was a Starbucks. She laughed and said, well, I wouldn’t have had my favorite drink or gotten to see you without it so it changed my day. Ha! Yesterday I made another drop to the thrift store, dropped a little gift off for a friend who hasn’t been well all week (I’d also shared with her the new “Healed” podcast you can find on this page: http://time4thinkers.com/t4t-events/healed/) and I gave my daughter an hour of my time helping her clean her room…after a full day of organization myself and when I initially didn’t feel like doing it. Here’s the thing this exercise is helping me to do: realize that I am naturally giving as part of my day everyday, even in little ways. We are natural givers because God is the great Giver and we reflect Her! So thanks for the idea, Real Talk participant, and thanks for keeping it going, Michael. “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast” (Ephesians 2: 8). |

Grateful. I was walking down the street on my way to the train this morning and affirmed in my thought that I was going to be open to the opportunity to give. As I walked into the station, I held the door for a young mom pushing a stroller. I didn’t think much of it because I always hold the door for folks. But I thought about the beauty of motherhood and the attention that mother had for her child and walked with that as I passed through the turnstile. As I rounded the corner, I saw that the elevator was being worked on and I knew that this mother with a stroller was probably planning to use it. I stopped and waited for her to catch up. I noticed the expression on her face went to worry as she saw the elevator and in that moment I asked if she wouldn’t mind my assistance carrying the stroller down. Phew! What relief came over her face. We pretended her son was flying down the stairs and we walked down and laughed and smiled with him the whole way. She was extremely grateful and it was awesome to be on the look out and to be able to help. It is amazing what the mental acceptance of service can do! |

Amy, I love your realization you shared, about how you ARE naturally giving, and this thread is maybe just helping us highlight it a little more! We’re the effect of God’s Being, after all – we ourselves are “the giving” of the great Giver. I’ve been following along with this thread since it started and have been looking forward to typing something up – and today, like Amy, I realized that this thread :is about encouraging and recognizing good, and glorifying God! And in the spirit of that I have a “give away” to share. Today I had to go to CostCo to return something and there were 2 shopping carts in the middle of the lot. So I grabbed them and was taking them to a stall, when a guy in a big truck started pulling in to where I was walking. I was tempted to be mad and be like, “Hey! I’m trying to help! Please don’t hit me with your truck!” but right away I saw how irrelevant that whole thought was and waved for him to keep pulling in. He smiled back and waved me to go forward, pulling the truck back out so I could easily walk through. Neat how giving just ripples through the day!!! |

This seems like a small thing, but my roommate had left a bunch of dirty dishes lying out for the last couple of days. He’s usually pretty responsible about that kind of stuff but the last couple days he’s had to work late. So this morning before going to work I just decided to do all the dishes and clean the kitchen on my own. I certainly didn’t have to but it felt good! |

That doesn’t seem like a little thing to me, Gordon. :) And Veronica, I can tell you that I remember the times that people helped me carry my daughter’s stroller up and down the subway stairs. I actually remember some of their faces. That’s a big thing, too. I tipped someone I wouldn’t normally tip because what they did was part of their job. But that felt good too. The guy was happy. :) I have to tell you, though, that since we started this give away campaign, I’ve received more than I’ve given. And not just because giving gives more to me than to the people I’m giving to! I’ve had more people do for me this past week than in recent history. It makes sense though. When you’re actively living a quality you’re not just expressing it to others, it’s a part of your experience, too. |

Yesterday, I was in a very long checkout line at a store that was struggling to keep up with all the customers. I only had a few items and got into the express lane. After about 5 minutes of the line not moving at all, I asked God if I should move to a different line. The answer was to stay put and look for why I was there. At that moment, te woman in front of me began to complain about the line. It drew my attention to how much she was holding. I had a mostly empty cart and offered for her to use the empty space. She was thrilled. She mentioned that she was in a hurry to get to choir practice at her church. I told her that I was going to a church meeting too and that she and I could pray that nothing could stand in the way of our desire to serve God. She lit up again and agreed. Then she started to tell me of physical problems she was having. I told her I would keep her in my prayers so that she would feel better. She was so happy and thanked me. At that point she had gotten everything out of my cart and a new register opened. I said goodbye and moved. I greated the cashier and asked how she was doing, which was followed by the fact that she had already worked her first job all day and was feeling exhausted and in pain. We talked a bit more, and as she handed me my receipt, I said, “If it’s ok with you, I would really like to pray for you.” This dear lady looked at me like I had given her a present. She looked me full in the eyes and said, “Oh would you, please? Thank you so much!” She smiled, and the tension left her face and body. I promised I would pray for her and said goodbye. I am so grateful that I asked God what to do instead of getting worried about the time or frustrated with the situation. I was so blessed by meeting those two women, and they definitely seemed better for the encounter. |

Dawn-Marie, thanks so much for sharing this story. It brings tears to my eyes to hear how the cashier lit up when you said you’d pray for her. Sometimes it’s easy to convince yourself that no one wants to hear about prayer, or God for that matter. This thread is a testament to the wrongness of that thought. I know I haven’t shared anything about giving, but I just encountered this thread and had to express my gratitude for it. And now I’m excited to play! |

I volunteer at a charity shop once a week. I really feel I was lead to the particular shop I help at; I looked at other charity shops, but for various reasons the first places I looked at didn’t work out, so instead I ended up at the shop I volunteer at. The people there are so lovely and the paid staff really appriciate the volunteers’ help. |

Dawn-Marie, that is incredible! Your story here is so very inspiring. It makes me want to start doing these kind of things in grocery store lines. :) |

A good friend’s dad passed away last night. It wasn’t unexpected, but still the whole family is so tired. So of course I’m making SOUP. A thick, delicious tomato broth with fresh chick peas, roma tomatoes, sweet potatoes, etc. etc. and rich Indian spices. It’s amazing how much love you can pack into a good soup! |

Nina, that soup sounds wonderful! I’m sure it was so welcome at your friend’s house. I woke up this a.m. w/ that phrase, “…heart meets heart reciprocally blest…” It’s from the article Pond and Purpose in Miscellaneous Writings. It’s such a good way to sum up what I was feeling yesterday. I volunteer once a week w/ an organization called Intercambio. That word means “exchange” in Spanish. They pair up teachers w/ students so that the students can learn English. But, more than that, their goal is actually to have community members exchange cultures and become more unified in their understanding and respect for each other. I went to my student’s house yesterday and came out of there feeling so blessed. My heart was overflowing. We’ve been together three years and I know she appreciates what I bring to her, but I wonder if she knows how much I appreciate what she gives to me. Probably so, the love is so apparent on both sides! Anyway, when I woke this a.m. and that phrase was running through my head, I knew it was about this thread. All of us who give, have come to realize that in our giving, we are blessed a hundred times over. “…heart meets heart reciprocally blest…” This thread is so uplifting. Thanks! |

I stumbled across this thread today and I love it. Such a wonderful outpouring of love. Was feeling a little guilty I haven’t been as generous as I could be, but then I realized that in the last week or so, I’ve given of my time to my Dad cleaning for him and taking him places, to my daughter, proof-reading something for her, to a local charity, donating some clothing, and to my FB friends, sharing today’s daily lift, which I especially enjoyed. And I’ve been making more of an effort to pray about local and world events lately. Thanks for this thread and all the inspiring ways you’ve all been giving. |

I’ve been thinking about this lately and it’s definitely been giving my days a happy twist. The other day I brought a cup of hot chocolate to a co-worker in the morning because I saw that she had come in early which was unusual for her. She was delighted, and touched that I had even noticed her there! |
