The Manual of The Mother Church: Myth busters

Mike Davis, researcher extraordinaire at the Mary Baker Eddy Library, joins Chet Manchester to answer some questions about The Manual of the Mother Church and its author, Mary Baker Eddy.

  1. Marsha says:

On page 61, under Music in the Church, it states that the music not be operatic but of an appropriate religious character and of a recognized standard of musical excellence, dignified and suitable and it does specify organ and piano on page 121, also.

I always think that if we were healing as Mrs. Eddy expected us to do, nobody would be thinking of how to change the services to make them “fresh”  Freshness should be coming from healing, not from tampering with Mrs. Eddy’s established church services.  Healing is where our thought needs to be directed.

  2. Mindy says:

Thank you for this fantastic discussion of the Manual. I appreciate the historical background and frank comments about what Mrs. Eddy did and didn’t intend. I’m also grateful to realize there was collaboration in the development of the by-laws. Mindy Montgomery @ Pure In Heart CS Church ~ SoCal
