Ted Gast: Angel
Ted Gast’s love for piano was evident at age four. By the time he was in kindergarten, he was able to play songs by ear. Early influences include the music of Vince Guaraldi and Scott Joplin. In his words: “It’s the music that gets me every time. That’s the way it’s always been for me. Growing up I loved singing with the car radio or with my dad and little brother before bedtime, or going to concerts. I especially loved Mom’s collection of old LP’s.”
As his appreciation for music developed, Ted dreamed of knitting together music and rhythm into new patterns. When he was 12, he cobbled together a recording studio using two beat up cassette tape recorders, a salvaged microphone, and the family’s foam camping mattresses. He remembers recording his first multi track masterpiece — bouncing vocal tracks between two old tape recorders in a bedroom closet. And even though three or four bounces played back more motor hum than music, people seemed to love it. He was hooked.
