Randall Williams: Sweet Agnes
Mother Teresa’s given name was Agnes, and this song’s about her. Or more specifically, it’s about the amazing fact that one day she was riding in a train when she looked out and saw the poorest of the poor in India and felt the call to serve them. And so she did, one at a time, for almost fifty years. Over one million people followed her example and became Co-Workers with her Sisters of Charity. “We cannot do great things,” she said, “just small things with great love.”

LOSE your life to find it
LYRICS
Agnes, sweet Agnes,
You gave your life to poverty and sadness.
When you looked out the window of that train,
Could you believe how our world forever changed?
You lost your life – to find it again.
Agnes, sweet Agnes,
In the simple sandals and the fabric -
Could you believe a million people would follow you
Into these lives of service they were called to?
They lost their lives - to find them again.
“If you can’t feed a hundred people,” you said, “just feed one,
‘cause each one of them is Jesus in disguise.”
You opened our eyes, sweet, sweet Agnes.
Agnes, sweet Agnes,
With such compassion for our madness.
Popes and presidents adorned you,
A hundred million of us mourned you.
May we lose our lives – to find them back again.
“If you can’t feed a hundred people,” you said, “just feed one,
‘cause each one of them is Jesus in disguise.”
You opened our eyes, sweet, sweet Agnes.
